It is my honor toannounce that Yu Xingze’s new works, namelyAnimal Brain series will debut at Gallery Schillerstrasse, Heidelberg, Germany on June4,2015!
At beginning I would like to recite the famous story told by Chuang-Tse: "Previously, I, Chuang-Tse,dreamed that I became a butterfly fluttering here and there and was as happy asa butterfly. I knew I was very happy with myself, though I did not know that Iwas Chuang-Tse. Suddenly I awoke, and there I was, myself again. Now I do notknow whether it was Chuang-Tse dreaming that he was a butterfly or a butterflydreaming that it was Chuang-Tse."This story is quitefascinating, because wefind that our own existence may not be absolute and that there is anotherpossibility -- our life might be a butterfly’s dream. Regardless of thephilosophical significance in this story, the question we want to ask is: Cananimals dream or think? Do they have the brains as we have? Thus we convert aphilosophical question into scientific or biological question. But it isinteresting that our artist now turns it into an artistic question and gives anartistic interpretation and imagination. Mr. Yu’s Animal Brain series is aresult of thinking about these serial questions from a new prospective.
As a young artist and nowteacher at Tongji University in Shanghai, Mr. Yu once studied in Düsseldorf ArtAcademy and Kassel Art Academy in Germany. While under the influence of Germanneo-expressionist masters J?rg Immendorff (1945-2007) and Ludwig Meyer, Mr. Yu has a strong figurative character and personal stylein his works. He has created his Bubble series for many years with impressiveresults. The world that is expressed via bubbles reflects the philosophicalthinking from the artist. In fact, after studying in Germany for many years, hehas a very good understanding on Western abstract art or expressionistictechnique with a keen interest in abstract or “informell” paintings. AnimalBrain series is an attempt in the abstract art and is also mixed with somereflections. About this series, the artist says, "I would like to drawnon-human things instead of the people with my experience and feelings. Forexample, while drawing, I fancy I am a bear, I think how the bear treats theimage of the world. I try to think from the standpoint of the bear. The bearand I are all illusions." In his previous works, animal images haveappeared many times. The artist often gives animals rich symbolic meanings, andthey are manifested through figurative forms. In the new series, theinspiration comes from the animal again, but the angle of thinking and themethod of expression have a whole new dimension.
Mr. Yu takes the patternof the brain cell of the animal as the media. Putting aside conventionaltechniques, he adopts unconventional and uncustomary methods to process images, opening up a new direction in his new art works. The significance of the worksis not only beyond the traditional philosophical proposition, but also with anew artistic perspective, the thinking is shifted twice: from human to animal, then from thinking to microscopic view. Thus, the artist gives the abstractpainting a new thinking and philosophical significance.
